Assistant Police Inspector Suspended for Allegedly Demanding Bribe

An assistant police inspector from the MHB police station in Borivali, Mumbai, has been suspended by the Mumbai police for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 3 lakh from a person who was arrested for his alleged involvement in transporting prohibited goods.

The police officials stated that the suspended officer, identified as Suryakant Pawar, initially threatened to arrest the arrested person in other cases and demanded money from the person’s friend.

Arrest and Investigation

A team from the MHB police station set up a trap and apprehended a tempo driver named Ranjan Kumar Rambadan Sahani for allegedly carrying prohibited items. Following this, a case was registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Foods and Drugs Safety Act.

During the course of the inquiry, it came to light that Sahani had committed the crime with the involvement of Shaukat Ali Khushiyal Ahmed Pathan and two others.

The Alleged Bribery

Pawar was assigned the investigation of the case by the senior officials at the police station. However, during the investigation, Pawar allegedly contacted Pathan’s friend, Noor Mohammad Kabir Ahmed Khan, and demanded Rs 3 lakh to prevent the arrest of Pathan in other cases.

Sources revealed that Pawar persistently harassed Khan for money, prompting Khan to approach the Anti-Corruption Bureau’s headquarters in Worli.

On December 4, Khan filed a complaint application against Pawar, and on December 18, the Anti-Corruption Bureau registered a case against Pawar under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Consequences and Further Actions

The Mumbai police took swift action upon receiving the complaint, suspending Assistant Police Inspector Suryakant Pawar pending further investigation and legal proceedings.

Authorities are determined to tackle corruption within the police force and ensure that the law enforcement system remains free from such malpractices.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau will conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations against Pawar, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to ascertain the truth.

Commitment to Transparency and Accountability

The Mumbai police have emphasized their commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability within the department. They have encouraged citizens to report any instances of corruption or misconduct by police officers promptly.

Corruption not only undermines the credibility of law enforcement but also hampers the overall safety and security of society.

By taking strict action against corrupt officials, the authorities aim to strengthen public trust and confidence in the police force.
