62-Year-Old Murder Suspect Captured After 31 Years of Evading Police

Mumbai, Dec 31 (PTI) – In a remarkable breakthrough, Mumbai Police successfully apprehended a 62-year-old man, Deepak Narayan Bhise, who was wanted in a murder case that dates back 31 years. The arrest took place in Nalasopara, a locality in the neighboring Palghar district, according to an official statement.

Deepak Narayan Bhise had managed to elude the authorities for over three decades, leading them on a wild goose chase across multiple locations before finally settling in Nalasopara. During this time, he had assumed a new identity, living in a rented accommodation with his family for the past two years. To sustain himself, Bhise had taken up tree cutting contracts, which allowed him to blend into the community without raising suspicion, the official revealed.

Decades-Old Murder and Attempted Murder Charges

The charges against Bhise stem from an incident that occurred in 1989 when he allegedly killed an individual named Raju Chikna. Additionally, he was also accused of attempting to murder Dharmendra Saroj. Bhise was granted bail in the murder case in 1992 but failed to appear for subsequent court hearings. Consequently, in 2003, the court declared him absconding and ordered the police to track him down, the official stated.

Despite rumors circulating within the local community that Bhise may have passed away, the police remained persistent in their search efforts. Finally, a breakthrough occurred when they managed to obtain the mobile phone number of Bhise’s wife. This crucial piece of information eventually led them to Nalasopara, where they successfully apprehended the fugitive on Friday night.

Bhise had been living in Nalasopara with his wife, two sons, and a daughter, leading a seemingly ordinary life while evading capture. His involvement in the community as a tree cutter allowed him to maintain a low profile, further complicating the police’s search efforts, the official explained.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigations

Following his capture, Bhise was promptly arrested under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to the attempt to murder. He was subsequently produced in court and is currently being held in a jail in Thane. As the investigation continues, authorities will delve deeper into the case to uncover any additional evidence or potential accomplices linked to Bhise’s crimes, said sub-inspector Nitin Satam from the Kandivali police station.
