Mumbai Police Arrests Murder Suspect after 31 Years

Mumbai, December 31 (PTI) – In a surprising turn of events, the Mumbai Police has successfully apprehended a 62-year-old murder suspect, Deepak Narayan Bhise, who was believed to be dead for the past 31 years. The arrest took place in the Nalasopara area of Palghar district, according to an official statement.

The breakthrough in the case came when the police managed to obtain the mobile phone number of Bhise’s wife. After evading the authorities by frequently changing his whereabouts, Bhise had finally settled in Nalasopara with his family for the past two years. He was residing in a rented accommodation and had been working on tree cutting contracts, as revealed by an official.

Bhise had been accused of the murder of Raju Chikna in 1989, along with an attempted murder on another individual named Dharmendra Saroj. Although he was granted bail in the murder case in 1992, Bhise had failed to appear for the subsequent court hearings. Consequently, in 2003, the court declared him as an absconder and ordered the police to trace him down, as stated by the official.

“Despite receiving information from the local people in Tulaskarwadi, Kandivali, where Bhise was believed to reside, suggesting that he might have passed away, we remained persistent in our search,” the official said.

After an extensive investigation, the police managed to trace Bhise’s wife’s mobile phone number, ultimately leading them to his location in Nalasopara. Subsequently, the arrest was made on Friday night, and Bhise was produced in court before being remanded to a jail in Thane. The police have charged him under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation is currently ongoing,” said Sub-Inspector Nitin Satam from the Kandivali police station.

Bhise had settled in Nalasopara with his wife, two sons, and a daughter. Apart from his family life, he had been involved in tree cutting contracts to sustain his livelihood, added the official.

This arrest marks a significant breakthrough for the Mumbai Police, who had relentlessly pursued Bhise for over three decades. The successful apprehension highlights the dedication and perseverance of the law enforcement authorities in bringing fugitives to justice, even after an extended period of time.
