Kolkata Businessman Found Dead, Murderers Arrested

KOLKATA: The body of a 35-year-old businessman, Arjun Sharma, was discovered in the Hooghly River on Thursday. Sharma, a resident of Nadial, had been missing since December 23. On Saturday, the police arrested two Rajabagan residents, Chandan Shaw (35) and Dipak Tato (30), who confessed to murdering Sharma and disposing of his body in the river after their failed attempt to extort money from him.

Arjun Sharma owned a shop in Nadial where he sold buttons manufactured at his own unit. His disappearance on the morning of December 23 prompted his parents to file a missing person report. Three days later, a body matching Sharma’s description was recovered from the Hooghly River. The body had been neatly packed and tied inside a sack. Following identification by his parents, a murder case was registered.

According to Joint CP (Crime & Organization) Syed Waquar Raza, Shaw and Tato were apprehended based on CCTV footage, technical evidence, and source information. Both suspects confessed to attempting to extort money from Sharma and subsequently murdering him. They have been remanded in police custody until January 8.

The police revealed that Shaw owed money to Sharma and believed that the victim carried a significant amount of cash, ranging from Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000. Shaw and Tato gained Sharma’s trust by presenting business proposals. The incident occurred in Rabindra Nagar-Maheshtala, where a scuffle broke out and Sharma was fatally attacked with bricks. The post-mortem examination also revealed signs of strangulation.
