Killeen Police Department Assists Homeless Community

Killeen Police Department

In a remarkable display of compassion and community service, the Killeen Police Department (KPD) recently launched an initiative to address the homeless issues in the city. Officers from the KPD dedicated their time and effort to reach out to the homeless community, providing assistance and support.

Last week, KPD officers embarked on a mission to clean up the areas surrounding the bridges along Interstate 14. They encountered scenes of shopping carts filled with miscellaneous items, individuals sleeping on sidewalks, and debris scattered across the vicinity.

Officer Evan Crouse, along with his fellow officers, approached each homeless individual with a warm smile and a friendly handshake. Their objective was not only to clean up the public spaces but also to establish a connection with the homeless community. The officers distributed trash bags and engaged in conversations, seeking ways to assist those in need.

Local Restaurant Delivers Meals to the Homeless

In another act of kindness, three women from Killeen and Harker Heights spent their Christmas Day spreading joy and delivering free meals to the homeless community. This heartwarming initiative was led by Michelle Lopez, who drove around the city accompanied by Crystal Troxell and Megan Henderson, ensuring that those under roadway bridges and homebound seniors received a warm meal.

As their car pulled up under bridges on W. S. Young Drive and Stan Schlueter Loop, the group encountered individuals nestled within the crevasses of the bridge, seeking shelter from the cold. They extended their helping hand, delivering meals and bringing comfort to those in need.

Tragic Incident on Christmas Day

Sadly, Christmas Day in Killeen was marked by a tragic incident. A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot in the 1400 block of North College Street. The KPD responded to the scene at approximately 2:50 p.m., discovering the victim with gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 4:28 p.m.

The KPD identified Jeremiah Lafredrick Matthews, a 20-year-old resident of Killeen, as a suspect in the fatal shooting. Matthews has been charged with manslaughter, among other charges, as the investigation continues.

Burglary Incident Results in Police Shooting

A recent burglary incident in Killeen took a dangerous turn when a woman was shot by police. The incident occurred on December 26, following a call reporting a burglary of a habitation in the 800 block of Adela Street.

According to the Killeen Police Department, the woman, identified as 44-year-old Michele Ero, allegedly lunged at an officer with a knife during the confrontation. In response to the threat, the officer discharged their firearm, injuring Ero.

As a result of the investigation, Ero has been charged with aggravated assault on a public servant. The Bell County District Attorney’s Office has reviewed the case and issued three complaints against Ero. A warrant for her arrest has been issued by Justice of the Peace Larry Wilkey.
