The sequence of events leading up to the shooting began around 1 a.m. when a team of officers assigned to a burglary suppression operation responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a dispensary on Embarcadero near Fifth Avenue. However, no significant developments arose from their investigation, and they left after taking a report. It remains unclear whether the officer who tragically lost his life was part of the initial response team.

At approximately 4:30 a.m., another report of a burglary in progress at the same business was received. Officers, both in plain clothes and uniform, swiftly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they encountered several individuals, one of whom opened fire multiple times, striking the plainclothes officer who was driving an unmarked vehicle. The injured officer’s partners rushed him to a nearby hospital, where medical staff made valiant efforts to save his life. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries at around 8:45 a.m., surrounded by his family and fellow officers.

The Oakland Police Department’s homicide detectives are actively investigating this officer’s killing, with numerous leads and evidence to follow up on. The incident prompted a significant police presence on Embarcadero, leading to the closure of the area to the public well into the afternoon.
