Driver Arrested for DUI Manslaughter After Fatal Crash on Florida’s Turnpike

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – A motorist accused of causing a tragic accident resulting in the death of a tow truck driver on Florida’s Turnpike in 2022 has been apprehended by the Florida Highway Patrol. Lucas Cerotti, a 42-year-old resident of Margate, has been booked into jail on charges of DUI manslaughter.

According to jail records, the incident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. on October 8, 2022, in the northbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike at Sunrise Boulevard. It was determined that Cerotti was responsible for the collision that claimed the life of the tow truck driver, identified as 22-year-old Darryl Brooks III.

The fatal crash transpired when a tow truck arrived to assist a disabled vehicle early that Saturday morning. Tragically, Cerotti’s Ford 250 collided with the tow truck in the outer lane. The Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation revealed that Cerotti veered off the roadway, entering the paved right shoulder, and forcefully struck the tow truck, causing it to collide with the disabled vehicle and another car.

Darryl Brooks III, who was positioned outside his vehicle at the time of the crash, sustained severe injuries. He was immediately rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, where medical personnel sadly pronounced him dead.

Lucas Cerotti is currently detained at the Broward Main Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings. As of now, no bond amount has been set for his release.
