LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Authorities have recently identified a skull that was discovered several decades ago near Lake Tahoe, California. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced that the remains belong to Donna Lass, a woman who was last seen in 1970.

Donna Lass was reported missing to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department in 1971, and though investigators pursued leads related to her disappearance, the case remained unsolved.

According to CNN, Lass was last seen on September 7, 1970, outside her apartment with a young blond man, as mentioned in a local newspaper clipping shared by the sheriff’s office.

In 1986, the sheriff’s office found an unidentified skull near Highway 80, close to Interstate 80. The skull was subsequently preserved at the Placer County Coroner’s Office for several decades.

In an effort to solve unsolved missing persons and suspicious death cases, the sheriff’s office and the district attorney’s office established a cold case team and allocated additional resources. This cold case team, in collaboration with the Crimes Against Persons unit, sent the skull to the California Department of Justice for DNA analysis.

The California Department of Justice Bureau of Forensic Services successfully matched the DNA from the skull with that of a member of Donna Lass’s family, which had been obtained by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department for their missing persons case. This conclusive DNA match allowed them to confirm the identity of the skull as Donna Lass’s remains.

Last week, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department located and informed Lass’s surviving family members about the identification, providing them with closure after decades of uncertainty.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort that brought closure to the Lass family. They also mentioned that the South Lake Tahoe PD will continue to investigate any future leads in this case.

The cause of Donna Lass’s death remains unknown, as reported by CNN.
