Alcohol and Poor Road Conditions Not Factors in Fatal Car Crash, Says RCMP

DIDSBURY – Two teenagers from Didsbury tragically lost their lives in a single-vehicle rollover accident near Carstairs, ruled out as alcohol and road conditions as the possible cause, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The incident occurred on the evening of December 27th, when the Didsbury RCMP received an emergency report regarding a collision at the intersection of Township Road 292 and Range Road 14 in Mountain View County.

Upon arrival at the scene, first responders discovered the lifeless bodies of a 16-year-old male and a 14-year-old female, both residents of Didsbury, as confirmed by RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.

Contrary to initial speculation, the deceased individuals were not related, as clarified by Savinkoff during an interview with the Albertan.

Both victims were students at Didsbury High School, a fact that has deeply saddened officials from the Chinook’s Edge School Division (CESD).

“The students had strong connections with their peers at Didsbury High School, so this tragedy will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the student body. Our staff, too, will be devastated by the loss,” expressed CESD superintendent Kurt Sacher to the Albertan.

Sacher further reassured that the school and division would be providing grief counseling and mental health support to any students in need or seeking assistance.

“We will ensure additional resources are available to address the emotional well-being of both students and their families. In the meantime, we strongly encourage affected families and students to reach out to the Kids Help Line and other mental health support services within the community,” Sacher added.

While the investigation into the crash is ongoing, the RCMP has ruled out speed and alcohol as contributing factors to the accident.

“Road conditions were reported to be fine at the time,” stated Savinkoff.

The ongoing investigation will examine various aspects, including the condition of the roadway, skid marks, and other evidence to determine the speed and causes leading to the rollover.

Notably, neither the male nor the female victim appeared to have been wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, according to investigators at the scene.

“It has been determined that they were not wearing their seatbelts, which is extremely unfortunate,” Savinkoff disclosed. “Seatbelts are particularly effective in preventing injuries in single-vehicle rollover collisions like this one.”

The RCMP emphasizes the importance of wearing seatbelts for both drivers and passengers while traveling in motor vehicles.

“In my experience, seatbelts play a crucial role in preventing severe injuries in accidents of this nature. It is essential that everyone in a vehicle wears their seatbelts,” Savinkoff emphasized.
