Surveillance Footage Reveals Shocking Moments Leading to Officer-Involved Shooting at Mall 205
Portland, Oregon – Recently released surveillance footage has unveiled the dramatic events that unfolded outside Mall 205, resulting in an officer-involved shooting and the death of a robbery suspect. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, startled witnesses as the suspect was shot by three Portland Police Bureau officers while fleeing the scene carrying stolen items.
The suspect, who remains unidentified at this time, can be seen in the video sprinting away before a barrage of gunshots can be heard. However, many questions regarding the precise details of the confrontation remain unanswered.
According to the authorities, the deceased suspect had an active arrest warrant, and a firearm was discovered near his body after his demise. In light of the numerous shots heard in the video, KOIN 6 News approached Portland police to inquire whether the suspect had fired his weapon. Regrettably, the police declined to provide an answer to this crucial question.
Recalling the incident, a witness named Oleg, who was working in the vicinity at the time of the shooting, stated, “Suddenly I heard loud pops, maybe four or five shots.”
The suspect is believed to have robbed the Target store situated at Southeast Washington Street, within the Mall 205 complex. The surveillance footage captures the suspect fleeing from the store towards Southeast 96th Avenue, where he ultimately encountered the police.
In the video, the suspect can be seen clutching stolen items and wearing headphones. These headphones match the ones found lying on the ground next to a firearm and what appeared to be blood in a black and white photograph released by the police.
Oleg, who shared the video with KOIN 6 News, described the incident as shocking and admitted that he did not have a clear view of the suspect at the moment the shots were fired. He stated, “I was shocked, and I was just standing there looking at it. Police were there with their weapons, pointing at someone. I did not see the guy, but they were pointing.”
Although the circumstances leading up to the confrontation and whether the suspect fired his weapon remain unclear, the police have confirmed that the suspect died at the scene. This incident marks the fourth officer-involved shooting this year. The use of deadly force by the police has decreased by almost half compared to previous years. However, the number of fatalities resulting from encounters with the Portland police remains consistent.
An internal review is currently underway, and all three officers who discharged their firearms have been placed on administrative leave as per standard procedure.
