Fargo Air National Guard Member Identified as Victim in Fatal Shooting in Minot

FARGO (KFGO) – A member of the North Dakota Air National Guard has been tragically identified as the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred in Minot on Christmas Eve.

Master Sgt. Nicholas Van Pelt, an esteemed airman serving in the 219th Security Forces Squadron based at the Minot Air Force Base, was fatally shot at his Minot apartment on December 24th. A 41-year-old woman, who remains unidentified, was critically wounded in the same incident.

Born and raised in Ringold, Georgia, Master Sgt. Van Pelt enlisted in the Air Force in 2001 and joined the North Dakota Air National Guard in 2009. He dedicated himself to serving his country and protecting his community.

Prior to his full-time service with the 219th Security Forces Squadron, Van Pelt served as a Ward County Sheriff’s Deputy until May 2023. His transition to the Air National Guard showcased his commitment to safeguarding the nation.

Colonel Mitch Johnson, the esteemed Commander of the 119th Wing of the North Dakota Air National Guard, expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the entire Hooligan family. The tragic loss of one of their own has left them devastated.

The shooting suspect, Daniel Breijo, a Homeland Security officer, was apprehended at the scene and has since been charged with felony murder and felony attempted murder. Authorities have confirmed that the victims and the accused had prior acquaintance.

Master Sgt. Van Pelt is survived by his loving parents and three children. The loss of such a dedicated and courageous airman has undoubtedly left a void in the lives of his loved ones.
