WHEELING, Ill. (CBS) – A man has been charged in the tragic wrong-way crash that claimed the life of a beloved high school teacher in Wheeling earlier this month.

Guillermo Salgado, a 28-year-old resident of Palatine, appeared at the Third District Courthouse in Rolling Meadows on Thursday, where he was formally charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI.

The fatal incident occurred on December 10th around 2:15 a.m. when a Ford Edge was traveling west on Palatine Road near Wheeling Road. At the same time, Salgado, driving a Toyota Camry, was heading east in the wrong lane, resulting in a head-on collision with the Ford, according to local authorities.

The crash claimed the life of 53-year-old Robert Gillen, a Palatine resident and esteemed high school teacher. Another individual sustained a serious but non-life-threatening injury.

An investigation revealed that Salgado had a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) level exceeding the legal limit of 0.08 at the time of the crash, as confirmed by the police.

Following his court appearance, Salgado was released on electronic monitoring and placed under home confinement, with the exception of attending medical appointments.

Salgado is scheduled to appear in court again on January 26th.
