South Korean Star Lee Sun-kyun: Woman Apprehended in Extortion and Blackmail Case

In a significant development in the ongoing investigation, authorities have apprehended a woman in her 20s, identified as ‘A’, who has been allegedly involved in extortion and blackmail targeting South Korean star Lee Sun-kyun. The Metropolitan Investigation Unit of the Incheon Police Agency issued an arrest warrant for ‘A’ on December 27. This move comes after ‘A’ failed to appear before the Incheon District Court despite a pre-arrest warrant filed against her.

‘A’ is currently in custody at the Nonyeon Police Station in Incheon, awaiting examination. The charges against her are related to her attempt to evade legal proceedings and extort $270,000 from the renowned actor who gained fame for his role in the highly successful film ‘Parasite’.

The arrest of ‘A’ follows a series of events that have cast a shadow over Lee Sun-kyun’s career. The actor, who has been under intense scrutiny for alleged illegal drug consumption, was found deceased in his vehicle at a park in Seoul. The exact cause of his untimely demise remains unknown.

Lee’s wife, Jeon Hye-jin, an actress and former Miss Korea contestant, discovered a suicide note and reported the incident to the police. This tragic end marked the conclusion of a tumultuous journey for the actor.

Career Hit by Drug Allegations and Blackmail

Prior to his untimely death, Lee Sun-kyun faced severe consequences for his alleged drug use. He was dropped from major projects and subjected to an official investigation. It was during this time that the blackmail case emerged, with Lee filing a complaint against ‘A’ for extorting $270,000 from him.

Throughout the police interrogations, Lee vehemently denied any involvement in illegal drug consumption. He even demanded a lie detector test, accusing ‘A’ of being part of a blackmail scheme against him. On December 23, Lee underwent his final police questioning, which lasted 19 hours. After the questioning, he left the police station early on Christmas Eve. Tragically, his subsequent death added a new and heartbreaking dimension to the ongoing legal saga.

Lee Sun-kyun, born in 1975, experienced a remarkable career boost with the release of ‘Parasite’. The groundbreaking film received widespread acclaim, winning prestigious awards such as the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and four Oscars. His sudden passing leaves a significant void in the Korean entertainment sector, marking the end of an extensive and successful career in both film and television.
