Man Arrested for Setting Restaurant on Fire in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A man has been arrested and is facing charges after allegedly setting a restaurant on fire in the Central Gardens area of Memphis. The incident took place on Union Avenue near South Watkins Street on Wednesday, just before 3 p.m., according to the Memphis Police.

Authorities responded to a report of arson and arrived at the scene to find a witness who claimed to have seen the suspect, identified as Joshua Massey, setting a fire on the restaurant’s front porch while employees were inside.

Witnesses say Massey grabbed pieces of wood trim from the back of the business and threw them into the fire, along with cardboard and paper, causing significant damage. The fire lasted for several minutes and resulted in a damaged wall in the front of the building. Fortunately, a quick-thinking witness was able to extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher.

The witness, who recognized Massey as someone who had recently been banned from the restaurant, provided crucial information to the police. A fire investigator was called to the scene and obtained surveillance footage, further confirming Massey’s involvement in the arson incident.

Following the incident, Memphis Police officers located Massey in front of a neighboring restaurant. He was wearing the same clothes seen in the surveillance footage, further strengthening the case against him.

Joshua Massey has been charged with aggravated arson and trespassing as a result of his alleged actions.
