One Dead and 13 Injured in Clash Between Independent and Awami League-Nominated Candidates in Barisal

Barisal, Bangladesh – A clash between supporters of independent candidate Pankaj Nath and Awami League-nominated candidate Shammi Ahmed turned violent, resulting in one fatality and 13 injuries. The incident occurred at Bangabandhu Udyan in Barisal at 2:40 pm on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Sirajul Islam Sikder, a 55-year-old individual who held the position of president in the Bangladesh Krishok League of Ward No 6 in the Guabari Union, according to Pankaj Nath. Nath further stated that 13 of his leaders and workers were admitted to the hospital, with Sirajul Islam dying after being taken for treatment.

Dr. Kabiruddin from the emergency ward of Sher-e Bangla Medical College Hospital reported that Sirajul Islam succumbed to his injuries after being admitted with severe wounds.

Meanwhile, Dr. Shammi Ahmed’s Election Coordinator, Syed Monir, claimed that chaos erupted during the public meeting due to Pankaj Nath’s followers. Monir alleged that Nath’s supporters attacked their activists, leading to Sirajul Islam’s unfortunate demise after being rushed to the hospital.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Arisul Haque of Kotwali police station confirmed being aware of the clash but stated that no complaints have been filed. He assured that legal action would be taken if a case is registered.

One of the injured individuals, Sohag, recounted that Awami League-nominated MP candidate Shammi Ahmed’s activists initiated an attack on Pankaj Nath’s procession upon entering the public meeting area. The police intervened and resorted to baton charges to control the situation.

Dr. Shammi Ahmed was unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
