Man Allegedly killed in Odisha’s Ganjam District Over Unpaid Debt

Berhampur, Odisha: In a shocking incident, a 33-year-old man was brutally murdered in Ganjam district of Odisha, allegedly due to his failure to repay a borrowed sum of Rs 10,000. The accused, identified as Prasant Kumar Swain (21), reportedly attacked Surya Kant Sahu, a fellow villager, with an iron rod near a local liquor outlet on Thursday night. The victim’s lifeless body was discovered by locals the following morning, immersed in a pool of blood. The police were immediately informed and the body was sent for a postmortem examination.

Authorities swiftly launched an investigation into the gruesome crime and were able to apprehend the accused, who had fled the scene after committing the heinous act. The police were able to identify the accused based on information provided by witnesses and evidence collected at the crime scene.

According to officials, Sahu had borrowed a sum of Rs 10,000 from Swain a few days prior. However, he failed to repay the debt within the agreed-upon timeframe, leading to a heated argument between the two individuals.

Tragically, the argument escalated to a violent confrontation, with Swain repeatedly striking Sahu with the iron rod. The victim succumbed to his injuries on the spot, leaving the community in shock and grief.

Following the incident, Nityanand Sahu, the brother of the deceased, lodged a formal complaint with the Pattapur police station, seeking justice for his brother’s untimely demise.

Ganjam Superintendent of Police, Jagmohan Meena, provided updates on the investigation, stating that the accused had been apprehended and taken into custody. Law enforcement officers were able to recover the iron rod used in the crime, as well as the mobile phone belonging to the victim.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences that can arise from unresolved financial disputes. The loss of a human life over a relatively small sum of money is a distressing reflection of the escalating tensions within society.
