Knoxville Workplace Fatality Under Investigation at Gatlinburg Convention Center

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA) is currently investigating a tragic workplace fatality that occurred at the Gatlinburg Convention Center. The incident, which took place on Tuesday, December 26 at 11:30 a.m., has prompted TOSHA to send an investigator to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify the responsible party.

The victim has been identified as Jeffrey Coker, a 66-year-old resident of Gray, Tennessee. Coker tragically lost his life while performing his duties at the convention center.

According to witnesses and the Gatlinburg Police Department (GPD), Coker fell from a height of 32 feet while installing lighting and stage elements for an upcoming event. He was employed by The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Union No. 197.

Emergency personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of a person falling from the ceiling in the Great Hall area of the convention center.

TOSHA has initiated its standard investigative process, which involves surveying the location, reviewing company records and procedures, and conducting interviews with management and employees. The agency aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the incident and its underlying causes.

At this time, TOSHA has not released any further details regarding the workplace fatality. However, it is important to note that all workplace fatalities must be reported to TOSHA within eight hours of occurrence, as stated on the administration’s website.
