A Texas man has been taken into custody after allegedly striking a small dog in the stomach, causing its death, as reported by local authorities. Benjamin Aguilar, 39, has been charged with cruelty to a non-livestock animal resulting in death, according to a press release from the Brownsville Police Department.

The incident took place on Sunday, Dec. 24, at Kanino Dog Grooming in Brownsville. Law enforcement officials responded to a call regarding an animal cruelty investigation.

According to the owner of a Yorkie, he had dropped off his dog at the grooming facility when an employee named Aguilar contacted him and informed him that the Yorkie had fainted. Suspicious of the circumstances, the owner requested to review the surveillance video capturing the incident.

The footage revealed Aguilar striking the Yorkie in the stomach and forcefully grabbing it by the neck, as stated by the police. The owner immediately reported the incident to the authorities.

During questioning, Aguilar admitted to using excessive force against the dog, justifying it as an attempt to maintain control due to the dog’s aggression. However, the Brownsville Animal Control officers who reviewed the footage concluded that Aguilar had indeed used excessive force while handling the victim’s dog.

Aguilar was subsequently arrested and booked into the Brownsville City Jail. He appeared in court on Monday and was granted a bond of $8,000.

The owners of Kanino Dog Grooming have not provided any comment regarding the incident.

Animal cruelty cases such as this one serve as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible and compassionate treatment of pets. Owners are encouraged to thoroughly research and choose reputable grooming facilities that prioritize the well-being of animals in their care.
