Female Inmate Experiences Medical Emergency in Smith County Jail

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – A female inmate identified as Susan Taylor, 58, suffered a medical emergency on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred in the day room of the jail, leading to a rapid response from the Smith County medical personnel.

Upon losing consciousness, Taylor’s condition prompted an immediate call for medical assistance. The Smith County medical personnel swiftly initiated life-saving measures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), stated the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly after the distress call, UT Health EMS arrived at the scene and promptly transported Taylor to UT Health emergency room. Unfortunately, despite the medical efforts, she passed away during her time at the hospital, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.

Following the tragic incident, the presence of a Precinct 1 constable led to the decision of ordering an autopsy. For further examination, Taylor’s body was subsequently transferred to Forensic Medical in Tyler.

As per standard protocol, the Texas Rangers will undertake an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate in-custody death.
