Tucson Police Department Officer-Involved Shooting: PRCIT Releases Findings

TUCSON, Ariz. – Pima Regional Critical Incident Team Reveals Details of October Officer-Involved Shooting

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team (PRCIT) has recently disclosed their findings from an officer-involved shooting that took place in Tucson, Arizona.

According to the PRCIT report, on October 26 at approximately 9:30 p.m., a 911 call was received from a residence located in the 100 Block of West Bilby Road in Tucson.

Multiple subsequent 911 calls reported a man firing shots into the air in the surrounding area.

Officers from the Tucson Police Department’s Operations Division South promptly responded to the address and located the male suspect in the front yard of a residence.

Before the officers could establish communication with the suspect, he immediately began firing multiple rounds from a handgun. In response, one of the officers discharged a single round from his department-issued rifle, striking the suspect.

The report states that the officers swiftly approached the injured suspect, providing immediate aid, while personnel from the Tucson Fire Department arrived to continue life-saving measures.

Despite the combined efforts of the officers and medical personnel, the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Matthew Salinas, was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, no other members of the community or the law enforcement department were harmed during the incident.

The officer who discharged his weapon has been identified as Officer Joshua Camacho, an experienced veteran with 8 years of service in the Tucson Police Department.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team (PRCIT) was immediately activated to oversee the criminal investigation of this critical incident.

Comprising investigators from various law enforcement agencies including the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Tucson Police Department, Oro Valley Police Department, Marana Police Department, Pascua Yaqui Police Department, Sahuarita Police Department, the University of Arizona Police Department, Pima Community College Police Department, South Tucson Police Department, and the Tucson Airport Authority Police Department, the PRCIT is an independent body responsible for leading investigations into critical incidents involving member agencies.

In this particular case, primary responsibility for the criminal investigation of the officer-involved shooting has been assigned to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the Oro Valley Police Department.

Additionally, the Tucson Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will conduct a separate administrative investigation to examine the actions of their personnel involved in the incident.

As is customary in all officer-involved shootings, once the investigations are concluded, the findings will be presented to the Pima County Attorney’s Office.
