JADE Launches Debating Programmes to Curb Violence in Jamaican Schools

The Jamaican Association for Debating and Empowerment (JADE) Limited, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Youth, is taking proactive steps to inspire student leaders in implementing programmes aimed at curbing violence in schools. This initiative is in response to a recent surge in incidents of bullying and violence in high schools across the island.

JADE has commenced the launch of its debating programmes in primary schools across all 14 parishes, with the full support of Dr Kasan Troupe, the permanent secretary in the education ministry. Xavier McFarlane, deputy programmes manager of JADE and a student at The University of the West Indies (UWI), highlights the benefits of these programmes.

McFarlane emphasizes, “When students are equipped with debating and critical thinking skills, they are better equipped to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence.”

Reflecting on his own experience, McFarlane shares that during his formative years, he faced ostracism due to his exceptional command of the English language. However, after joining JADE and participating in numerous speaking engagements, he was able to develop his confidence and become head boy of Cornwall College, his high school. These opportunities not only generated earnings for him but also empowered him to overcome discouragement and build a successful future.

McFarlane recently met with Prime Minister Andrew Holness to lobby for the government’s support for JADE. He emphasized the potential of debating to empower marginalized individuals and contribute to the country’s development, rather than relying on what he describes as “draconian” methods to combat crime.

Similarly, Kimberly Simms, head girl of the Montego Bay High School for Girls and president of the Jamaica Prefects Association (JPA), attests to the transformative power of debating. Simms credits JADE for equipping her with the skills to make positive changes in Jamaica.

Simms explains, “JADE offers comprehensive training to student leaders and students from all backgrounds. Through debating, we learn to express ourselves, channel our passion, and engage in respectful and meaningful conversations.”

Inspired by her training, Simms initiated the ‘Anti-violence in Schools: It’s Just a Shoe’ Campaign. The campaign arose following an incident at B.B. Coke High School in St Elizabeth, where a student was assaulted after accidentally stepping on another student’s shoe. The initiative condemns such violence and promotes peaceful conflict resolution strategies.

To address the issue of violence in schools, training sessions were conducted for prefects by representatives from the education ministry, JADE, and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). The aim was to equip prefects with conflict management skills and foster a safer school environment.

Simms emphasizes the importance of early intervention, stating, “Our schools mirror our society, and it is crucial to address escalating violence at an early stage rather than waiting for serious incidents to occur.”

As members of JADE and student leaders, McFarlane and Simms express their anticipation of increased support from the ministry. They hope to launch the debating programmes in schools progressively, alongside the ‘Fully Bright Programme.’ This initiative aims to instill a sense of value for education among students and encourage meaningful discussions about Jamaica’s development.

JADE’s efforts to empower student leaders and promote peaceful conflict resolution strategies are expected to contribute to a safer and more harmonious school environment in Jamaica.
