According to Coweta officials, the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve when deputies attempted to conduct a routine traffic stop. The vehicle in question was a silver Ford Focus with a ‘test drive’ tag that displayed no dates or numbers on the back.

As deputies pulled behind the car, the driver, identified as 43-year-old Darius Herring, made a sudden U-turn in the driveway of a residence on Welcome Arnco Road and started driving in the opposite direction.

The sheriff’s office reported that Herring accelerated the Ford Focus to 80 mph in a 45-mph-zone, recklessly speeding between multiple roads before eventually pulling into a driveway and fleeing on foot into the nearby woods.

Coweta authorities discharged a Taser twice while attempting to apprehend Herring, but he managed to get back up and continued running. However, his escape was short-lived, as he tripped over his own feet in the bushes and fell to the ground. The sheriff’s office took advantage of this opportunity to restrain Herring, but not before he bit one of the deputies.

During a search of Herring’s person, deputies discovered a large bag containing approximately 8 grams of suspected methamphetamine, Adderall, and a glass bulb pipe with white and black burnt residue. Herring was subsequently arrested and booked into the Coweta County Detention Center.
