A 28-year-old technology graduate has been apprehended by Delhi Police from Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district for defrauding grieving parents with false claims that their missing children had been found. The accused, identified as Shyamsundar Chauhan, would monitor individuals whose children had gone missing and deceive them into believing that their offspring had been located. He would demand varying sums of money, ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 40,000, under the guise of ensuring the safe return of their children.

Chauhan, a Computer Applications graduate, was arrested after a complaint was filed on December 15 by a resident of Burari at Wazirabad police station regarding the disappearance of a girl. The police followed standard procedures by collecting details of the missing persons and uploading them to the Delhi Police’s missing person’s portal. On the same day, the victim’s family received a call from an individual claiming to know the location of the missing girl and offering to reveal her whereabouts.

Several days after filing the complaint, the family received a call from the fraudster, posing as an official, stating that their child had been found but required a payment of Rs 8,000 for her safe return. The desperate parents transferred the money using the QR code provided by the perpetrator. Unfortunately, they never heard from him again or received any information about their missing child.

Upon realizing that no progress had been made, the parents reported the incident to the police. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Manoj Kumar Meena stated that multiple parents had recently lodged similar complaints, claiming that their missing children had been found and that they had made payments to police personnel without receiving any response.

The Conman’s Modus Operandi

Explaining the accused’s modus operandi, DCP Manoj Kumar Meena revealed that Chauhan would contact the families of the victims using the provided phone numbers. Pretending to be a caretaker, he would falsely claim to have the missing person in his custody. Through emotional manipulation and false promises, Chauhan and his associates would solicit funds from concerned family members, often resorting to online tactics and presenting QR codes for monetary transactions. Desperate for the well-being of their loved ones, the families succumbed to these schemes, sending amounts ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 40,000.

During the investigation, the police discovered that similar cases had been registered in Wazirabad police station and other parts of Delhi, indicating that the culprit had defrauded 904 people across the city using the same modus operandi. DCP Meena lamented that the relatively low amounts involved often discouraged families from reporting complaints against the fraudster.

The police successfully traced and arrested the accused, Shyamsundar Chauhan. During interrogation, Chauhan confessed to downloading information about missing persons from ZIPNet and other government websites.
