ANTIOCH — A 50-year-old man from Antioch, who was previously implicated in a notorious slaying that took place on the campus of Contra Costa College in 1996, is now facing charges in connection with two separate shootings that occurred two months apart, as per court records.

According to the court documents, Samuel Paul Cox Jr. has been charged with negligent discharge of a firearm and illegal possession of a gun in relation to a shooting incident on November 4. Additionally, he has also been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with a shootout that transpired on September 20. Cox has pleaded not guilty to all charges and was held to answer for the three charges during a preliminary hearing on December 14.

Both shootings took place in Antioch and fortunately did not result in any fatalities or injuries, authorities have confirmed. In the September 20 shootout, Cox was identified as one of the three suspects who fired shots. However, it is alleged that Cox fired back in self-defense after a man opened fire at him and another individual.

In 1996, Cox, along with two others, was arrested and charged with the murder of Christopher Robinson, a student and baseball player at Contra Costa College. The incident was described by the police as a gang-related shooting that occurred outside the college’s bookstore in San Pablo. Cox eventually accepted a plea deal, which led to a manslaughter conviction, according to court records.

It is this manslaughter conviction that the Contra Costa prosecutors are currently citing to establish that Cox was prohibited from possessing firearms during both shooting incidents. Cox’s next court date has been scheduled for January 2. He is currently being held in jail, with bail set at $350,000, as per court records.
