PORTAGE, Ind. (WGN) — A miraculous rescue unfolded in Northwest Indiana as a man was found alive after spending several days trapped under a bridge along Interstate 94. The incident occurred after a devastating crash that left the man’s life hanging in the balance.

On Tuesday at approximately 3:45 p.m., two men, Nivardo Delatorre and his father-in-law Mario Garcia, were scouting for fishing locations near Salt Creek beneath the bridge when they stumbled upon a partially submerged vehicle. They immediately contacted emergency services to report the discovery.

Indiana State Police swiftly responded to the scene. Upon inspection of the crashed vehicle, one of the men noticed movement inside and made the shocking discovery that a man was trapped within. The survivor has been identified as 27-year-old Matthew Reum from Indiana.

Matthew Reum’s miraculous survival story took a turn for the better due to the bravery and quick thinking of the two men who found him. Reum had been trapped since Wednesday, December 20, unable to reach his cell phone to call for help.

Emergency crews worked swiftly to extricate Reum from the wreckage. However, he sustained potentially life-threatening injuries during the crash and was immediately transported to the hospital via a medical helicopter. His current condition remains unknown.

Authorities conducted a press conference on Tuesday evening to provide an update on the rescue operation. The full press conference can be viewed in the video player above.
