Wild Elephant Tramples Ninth Grader to death in Rangamati District

A tragic incident unfolded in Sitapahar Marmapara of Raikhali union no 2 in Kaptai upazila of Rangamati district on Wednesday afternoon, as a ninth-grade student fell victim to a wild elephant’s ruthless attack. The deceased has been identified as Ongshehla Marma, a 14-year-old boy and a student of Bengalhalia High School.

The unfortunate incident occurred around 5 pm when Ongshehla was returning home with his cattle from the field. Suddenly, he was confronted by a wild elephant, which launched a ferocious attack, ultimately leading to the young boy’s tragic demise.

Local sources state that Ongshehla Marma succumbed to his injuries on the spot, unable to withstand the brutal force of the elephant’s assault. The news was confirmed by Md Salim, the UP member of ward No. 1, who was present at the scene of the incident.

Upon receiving the news, Ansarul Karim, the officer-in-charge of Chandraghona police station, verified the death and assured that a police team would be dispatched to the location to investigate further.

Wildlife-human conflicts have been a recurring issue in the region, with encounters between villagers and wild elephants becoming increasingly common. These incidents pose significant threats to the safety and security of local communities, particularly students like Ongshehla Marma, who become vulnerable targets during their daily activities.
