The young victim, identified as Sani Mardi, was a bright third-grade student full of hopes and dreams. Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police, Pushpraj Singh, confirmed to HT that the lifeless body of the little girl was recovered and promptly sent for an autopsy, as authorities began their investigation into this heart-rending incident.

The dreadful incident unfolded in the Athiabari area, which falls under the Kachugaon forest division, a designated elephant reserve. Forest officials believe that the elephants may have been attracted by the abundance of banana plants in the residential areas, leading them to venture into the village in search of food. As they ravaged their way through the neighborhood, the herd inadvertently demolished several houses. The swift and fortunate actions of the villagers allowed them to escape to safety, but sadly, young Sani Mardi was left behind, ultimately falling victim to the rampage and losing her life.

Both the forest department and local police authorities swiftly responded to the incident, launching a comprehensive investigation into the unfortunate tragedy. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing human-wildlife conflict in the region, shedding light on the urgent need for effective measures to mitigate such devastating occurrences and protect the lives of both humans and animals.

A concerned local resident expressed the struggles faced by the community due to frequent encounters with wild elephants. The destruction of crops and occasional attacks on houses have become recurring challenges for the villagers, leading to a constant state of fear and anxiety. The loss of young Sani Mardi’s life underscores the critical importance of finding sustainable solutions to minimize human-wildlife conflicts and ensure the safety and well-being of all.
