Davis stated that the 5-year-old ran a bath for himself while she was asleep and suffered burns from hot water. Schermerhorn allegedly prevented her from seeking medical attention for the child. When Davis woke up on January 7, Logan was missing, and Schermerhorn claimed he had taken him to his registered nurse mother.

However, conflicting statements emerged from Schermerhorn and Davis. Schermerhorn told the police that Davis had taken off with the boy in his car, and that was the last time he saw him. Logan’s father, Alvin Bowman, reported the boy missing on January 27 after weeks of trying to get him from his mother for weekend visitation.

Concerns about Logan’s well-being were raised by his kindergarten teacher, who contacted the Department of Social Services in November 2002 to report suspected abuse. Despite Davis being initially sentenced to 30 years on a murder charge, she served 15 years behind bars and 15 years of supervised probation. Schermerhorn was sentenced to two years in prison on child neglect and assault charges.
