Investigators Identify Salvadorian Man Found Shot at Arizona-Nevada Border After Nearly 50 Years

Law enforcement officials announced on Tuesday that they have finally identified a Salvadorian man who was found shot in the head at the Arizona-Nevada border almost half a century ago. The victim, Luis Alonso Paredes, is believed to have been living or working in Las Vegas prior to his tragic death.

The perplexing case dates back to late November 1976 when a group of hikers stumbled upon a shallow grave containing the remains of a man in his mid-thirties, as shared by the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office through a Facebook post.

During the initial investigation, it was determined that the victim had been shot at close range in the head, leaving detectives with limited evidence to work with. Although fingerprints were obtained during the autopsy, the victim remained unidentified, and no substantial leads were discovered.

However, this long-standing mystery took a significant turn in October of this year when investigators from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Investigations unit compared the victim’s fingerprints to the available national fingerprint records. This advanced forensic technique, which was not feasible back in 1976, led to the positive identification of the victim as Luis Alonso Paredes.

The identification of Paredes marks a breakthrough in the case, but investigators are not stopping there. They are now focused on gathering more information about his life and family, as well as uncovering the circumstances surrounding his death. Apart from his potential ties to Las Vegas, law enforcement authorities suspect that Paredes may have been employed by either the Coast Guard or the Navy in San Francisco, approximately ten years prior to his tragic demise.

Despite these significant advancements, locating any of Paredes’ family members has proven unsuccessful thus far. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with information that could aid in finding Paredes’ relatives to come forward and contact them.
