(The Hill) — U.S. Capitol Police have arrested a man who was allegedly found carrying a machete and a knife on the East Front of the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday afternoon.

According to a statement released by the police, an officer noticed a man exhibiting strange behavior. The man was pacing back and forth before eventually sitting down on a ledge on the east side of the Capitol building around 4:15 p.m.

Concerned by this unusual behavior, the officer approached the man and engaged in a conversation for several minutes. During their interaction, the officer noticed the man had a brick in his pocket, prompting further suspicion.

The officer asked the man to discard the brick, which he did. However, to the officer’s surprise, the man also revealed a knife and placed it on the ledge. Realizing the potential danger, the officer immediately called for backup and secured the knife.

Further inspection revealed that the man had concealed a machete under his clothing. In response, the officer drew his service weapon and ordered the man to raise his hands.

Cooperating with the officer’s instructions, the man complied, allowing other officers to safely confiscate the machete and proceed with the arrest.

The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Jose Leonardo Marquez.

Capitol Police have charged Marquez with carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of a prohibited weapon.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger expressed his pride in the vigilance and strong intuition of the officers involved in the arrest. He stated, “This is another example of our USCP officers diligently working to ensure the safety of everyone around the U.S. Capitol.”

Authorities are currently uncertain about Marquez’s purpose for being in Washington, D.C. At this stage, there is no evidence to suggest that he was targeting any specific member of Congress.

The Hill has reached out to the police for further information regarding this incident.
