Tragic Accident Claims Life of 20-Year-Old Man in James City County

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. – A devastating incident occurred on Christmas Eve when a 20-year-old man was struck by a semi-truck on Richmond Road. Sadly, Joshua Barkley, who had just celebrated his 20th birthday the day before, passed away on December 26. The James City County police confirmed that Barkley was taken off life support that afternoon.

The accident took place in the early hours of December 24, around 12:30 a.m., in the 7200 block of Richmond Road near Noah’s Ark Veterinary Hospital. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene following reports of a vehicle and pedestrian incident.

According to the initial investigation conducted by the James City County police, a 2021 Freightliner truck, traveling eastbound without a trailer attached, attempted to avoid hitting Barkley, who was retrieving personal belongings from the roadway. Unfortunately, Barkley was struck by the truck, unaware of its approaching presence.

Emergency personnel provided immediate life-saving treatment to Barkley before airlifting him to VCU Medical Center in critical condition. Tragically, Barkley’s injuries were too severe, and he succumbed to them at the medical center.

The James City County police have stated that charges are not expected to be filed against the truck driver involved in the accident.

The incident has left the community in shock and mourning. Friends and family of Barkley are devastated by the loss of such a young life, especially during the holiday season.
