Indiana Man Trapped in Crashed Truck for Nearly a Week Found Alive by Fishermen

An Indiana man who crashed his truck and had been trapped inside it for almost a week was miraculously discovered alive on Tuesday by two fishermen who stumbled upon the wrecked vehicle.

Nivardo Delatorre and his father-in-law Mario Garcia, two compassionate fishermen, were walking along Salt Creek in Portage, Indiana, searching for fishing spots when they spotted the crashed truck under an overpass on Interstate 94. Initially assuming the worst, they were shocked when one of them touched the body inside the vehicle and the man turned his head and spoke to them.

“When I went to touch it, he turned around,” Garcia recalled at a press conference. “And it almost killed me there because it was kind of shocking.”

“He was alive, and he was very happy to see us — I’ve never seen a relief like that,” he added. “He says that he tried yelling and screaming, but nobody would hear him. It just was quiet, just the sound of the water.”

The two brave fishermen immediately dialed 911, and within minutes, first responders arrived at the scene around 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The driver informed the fishermen that he had been trapped and unable to move since December 20.

The driver, identified as 27-year-old Matthew Reum, had been traveling westbound on Interstate 94 when his truck veered off the road for reasons unknown, according to a news release by the Indiana State Police.

The vehicle plunged into a ditch, eventually reaching a creek and coming to a halt under the bridge. Reum found himself pinned inside the vehicle, unable to access his cellphone to seek help.

The Portage Fire Department and the Burns Harbor Fire Department skillfully used heavy machinery to extricate Reum from the wreckage. He was then airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, requiring treatment for severe, life-threatening injuries.

The rescue operation lasted several hours due to the challenging terrain and the difficulties encountered in freeing Reum from the entangled truck.
