The Indiana State Police received a call from Porter County Dispatch at approximately 3:45 p.m., reporting a crash on Interstate 94. The callers, who were fishing enthusiasts scouting for fishing holes, noticed a crashed vehicle with what appeared to be an unresponsive individual inside. However, upon reaching the car, they were surprised to find the occupant moving and speaking.

Fire crews were immediately dispatched to extricate the man from the wreckage. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for urgent medical attention.

According to the driver and the ongoing investigation, the man trapped in the wrecked car has been identified as 27-year-old Matthew Reum. Reum was driving a 2016 Dodge Ram in the westbound direction on I-94 when, for unknown reasons, he veered off the road. His truck missed a guardrail, causing it to flip over the bridge and land in Salt Creek. Tragically, this pinned Reum inside the vehicle, rendering him unable to call for help.

Remarkably, Reum managed to survive the harrowing six-day ordeal by sheer willpower and resourcefulness, drinking rainwater to stay hydrated. His determination to stay alive was undoubtedly crucial in his survival.
