Human remains found in Virginia have been confirmed to belong to Logan Nathaniel Bowman, a 5-year-old boy who went missing in January 2003, according to authorities. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office announced in a statement on social media last week that additional charges are expected to be filed in connection with the case.

Logan Nathaniel Bowman disappeared over two decades ago, and his mother, Cynthia Davis, and her then-boyfriend, Dennis Schermerhorn, were charged in his disappearance. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Logan’s remains were discovered in Galax, Virginia, in September 2022.

Remains Found Nearly 20 Years After Disappearance

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office stated that Logan’s remains were discovered in a wooded area of Galax, a small city in southwestern Virginia, on September 6, 2022. Investigators determined that the remains had been there for an extended period of time.

To confirm the identity of the remains, investigators collaborated with Othram Inc., a forensic genealogy company based in Texas. They used DNA analysis and compared it to Logan’s relatives.

According to DNASolves.com, a website owned by Othram, the remains were found inside a trash can along with a sleeping bag, a Winnie the Pooh blanket, and a cloth fragment.

Logan’s disappearance in 2003 was classified as “suspicious circumstances” by DNASolves.com. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System reported that Logan had a healing fracture in his left arm, tooth decay, and burn scars on his feet.

Father Seeks Justice and Closure

Wayne Bowman, Logan’s father, expressed relief that his son’s remains have finally been identified. He described Logan as a “good kid” and expressed his desire to give him a proper burial. Wayne Bowman hopes that the identification of the remains will lead to justice for his son.

\”I can go on, I know where he’s at now. I don’t have to worry where he’s at. I know it hurts, but it’s going to be OK,\” Wayne Bowman said in an interview with WFXR.

Mother and Boyfriend Could Face Additional Charges

Cynthia Davis, Logan’s mother, pleaded guilty to two counts of child neglect and one count of homicide in previous court proceedings. She received a sentence of 10 years for each count of child neglect and 30 years for homicide, with a suspended sentence of 15 years in prison and 15 years of probation.

Dennis Schermerhorn, Davis’ former boyfriend, was sentenced to a year in jail for one charge of child neglect. However, the murder charge and another child neglect charge against him were later dropped.

The authorities in Grayson County, where Logan went missing, are considering additional charges in the case. Both Davis and Schermerhorn are currently not in police custody or incarcerated.

Attorneys representing Davis and Schermerhorn in their previous court cases were unavailable for comment.
