Two Fishermen Rescue Mishawaka Man Trapped in Vehicle

Two anglers came to the aid of a Mishawaka man who found himself trapped in a vehicle after a horrifying accident.

On Tuesday, Dec. 26, at approximately 3:45 p.m., the Porter County Dispatch Center received an urgent 911 call reporting a crash on I-94 at the Salt Creek overpass, located just one mile east of the Portage exit.

While strolling along Salt Creek to scout potential fishing spots, two local fishermen stumbled upon what seemed to be a vehicle that had been involved in an accident.

Driven by curiosity, the compassionate duo approached the vehicle and discovered an individual who appeared lifeless. However, to their astonishment, when one of the fishermen touched the occupant, he miraculously turned his head and began communicating with them. Recognizing the dire situation, the Good Samaritans promptly dialed 911 and requested immediate assistance.

The Portage Fire Department and Burns Harbor Fire Department swiftly responded to the distress call. After a lengthy and challenging extrication process, the skilled rescuers managed to successfully extract the driver from the wreckage.

During the rescue operation, investigators determined that the crash had likely occurred around Dec. 20. Subsequently, the driver, who sustained severe, life-threatening injuries, was airlifted by Lutheran Air to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for urgent medical treatment.

Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the driver was operating a 2016 Dodge Ram truck, traveling westbound on I-94 when, for unknown reasons, it veered off the road. The vehicle careened into the north ditch, narrowly missing a protective guardrail, before overturning and finally coming to a rest under the I-94 bridge.

Tragically, the driver was trapped inside the vehicle and unable to call for help. Fortunately, the fortuitous presence of the two individuals exploring the creek that afternoon prevented a potentially different outcome. No prior reports of a crash in the area had been made before the fishermen stumbled upon the wreckage.

Authorities have since identified the driver as a 27-year-old man from Mishawaka.

The resilience and determination displayed by the driver to survive this harrowing crash were nothing short of extraordinary. Despite being exposed to the elements for an extended period, he managed to sustain himself by consuming rainwater for hydration.

Indiana State Police emphasized that this incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of always informing someone of your travel plans, including the route you are taking, and the necessity of having emergency items readily available in your vehicle.
