AUBURNDALE, WI (WSAU) — Tragedy struck on Tuesday when a 25-year-old Arpin man lost his life in a fatal crash on Highway 10 near Auburndale.

According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred when the driver of a Toyota, identified as Michael Baugh, attempted to overtake a semi-truck by pulling into the passing lane near the intersection with Day Road. However, at the same moment, an oncoming vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on the eastbound lane collided head-on with Baugh’s car.

The fatal victim, Michael Baugh, sadly succumbed to his injuries at the crash site. His passenger, 23-year-old Alissah Hardesty from Arpin, sustained minor injuries in the collision.

The wrong-way driver has been identified as 70-year-old Elsie Punke. Following the accident, Punke was swiftly transported to Marshfield Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition. Currently, there have been no updates regarding her health status.

In response to the crash, the eastbound lanes of Highway 10 had to be closed for over four hours on Tuesday. Law enforcement authorities are diligently working to investigate and reconstruct the scene to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the tragedy.
