On Valentine’s Day 2023, a retired engineer named Bill Gorga became an unexpected hero when he intervened in a carjacking incident in Greenport. The incident involved a local grandmother’s Mercedes, which was stolen with her 14-month-old grandson in the backseat. Thanks to the quick thinking and bravery of Mr. Gorga, the carjacker was apprehended and the baby was safely rescued.

According to Mr. Gorga, he had planned to do some shopping on Valentine’s Day before enjoying a steak and lobster dinner with his wife, Stephanie. However, his plans took a dramatic turn when he heard a woman screaming hysterically as he entered a local shop on Front Street. Concerned that there had been a car accident, Mr. Gorga followed the woman outside and discovered that her car had been stolen with her baby inside.

Without hesitation, Mr. Gorga offered his assistance and reassured the grandmother that they would stop the carjacker. They quickly got into Mr. Gorga’s Ford truck and began pursuing the stolen Mercedes. To draw attention and increase their chances of stopping the car, Mr. Gorga gunned the engine and honked the horn.

Using his driving skills, Mr. Gorga managed to race ahead of the Mercedes and force it to stop on the side of the road. The grandmother wasted no time and jumped out of the truck, immediately getting into the stolen car. However, the carjacker managed to escape again, this time with the grandmother and the baby still inside.

Undeterred, Mr. Gorga pursued the car for a second time, driving at dangerously high speeds. He successfully drove the Mercedes off the road and onto the shoulder, allowing the grandmother and the baby to escape. Unfortunately, the carjacker squeezed past Mr. Gorga’s truck and fled once more.

Realizing that he had done all he could, Mr. Gorga dialed 911 to alert the authorities. The entire ordeal, which felt like half an hour, actually took place in just four minutes, as confirmed by the timestamps on Mr. Gorga’s phone.

Southold Police Chief Martin Flatley praised Mr. Gorga’s courage and proactive role in stopping the carjacking. The police credited him for his heroic actions and commended his quick thinking. The carjacker, identified as 55-year-old Paul Ludeman of Holtsville, was later arrested and charged with multiple felonies.

After the harrowing incident, Mr. Gorga and his wife were finally able to enjoy their Valentine’s Day dinner. Stephanie Gorga expressed her admiration for her husband, stating that he had always been her hero and that now he is also considered a hero in the eyes of the Greenport community.
