Woman Arrested for Murder After Young Daughter Found Dead in Phoenix Dumpster

A woman is currently in custody and facing a murder charge following the tragic discovery of her young daughter’s lifeless body in a dumpster outside a business establishment in west Phoenix on Christmas Eve. The suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Sophia Simmons.

The distressing incident unfolded at approximately 8 p.m. on Sunday when Phoenix police promptly responded to a distress call reporting a body found in a dumpster near the intersection of 31st Avenue and Thomas Road. Upon arrival, officers were confronted with the heartbreaking sight of a deceased young girl. Homicide detectives were immediately summoned to the scene. While the exact age of the girl has not been disclosed, authorities have confirmed that she was of school age.

On the following day, investigators received a crucial tip indicating that the child had been subjected to assault by Simmons, who then disposed of her lifeless body. Armed with this new information, police promptly obtained a search warrant for Simmons’ residence. During the search, investigators reportedly discovered evidence suggesting an attempt to clean a crime scene. Although Simmons was not present at the time, authorities learned that she was en route to Arizona on I-10. Detectives successfully apprehended her in Tonopah.

Simmons has been formally charged with multiple felony offenses, including first-degree murder, child abuse, and tampering with evidence. As the investigation remains ongoing, detectives are eagerly awaiting specific details regarding the circumstances surrounding the young girl’s tragic demise from the Office of the Medical Examiner.
