BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Melbourne man was rushed to the hospital on Monday night after leading deputies on a dangerous chase through Brevard County. The incident began when a concerned citizen reported a truck traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 near Barefoot Bay.

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Kyle Lahanse, nearly collided with several civilians and three responding deputies. To prevent harm to innocent citizens, law enforcement decided to apprehend the suspect before any accidents occurred.

Despite repeated attempts by deputies to stop him, Lahanse continued driving in the wrong direction on U.S. 1. Stop sticks were deployed near the intersection of U.S. 1 and State Road 192, but they were unsuccessful in halting the recklessly driven truck.

With the help of the Melbourne Police Department, intersections along Lahanse’s route were closed to ensure the safety of other motorists. Even after transitioning into the correct lanes, Lahanse continued to drive erratically, swerving across all lanes and occasionally returning to oncoming traffic.

A second set of stop sticks deployed just north of Pineda Causeway managed to deflate the front passenger-side tire of the truck, but Lahanse persisted in his escape. It was only after a third set of stop sticks punctured the truck’s rear passenger-side tire near U.S. 1 and Suntree Blvd. that Lahanse lost control of the vehicle.

The truck veered into the grass median and rolled over multiple times, ejecting Lahanse from the vehicle. Deputies provided immediate aid until Brevard County Fire Rescue personnel arrived and transported him to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

According to the sheriff’s office, Lahanse has since stabilized, but he will face numerous charges upon release. These charges include reckless driving, aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude, and potential charges for driving under the influence pending the ongoing investigation.

“This guy put so many lives at risk, including his own, all because of his irresponsible and immature actions,” said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

The arrest of Lahanse was made possible by the quick actions of the deputies involved and the collaboration with the Melbourne Police Department. Their efforts prevented harm to innocent civilians.
