Assam Police Orders Inquiry into Man’s Death Following Questioning in Connection with Grenade Blast

The Assam Police has initiated an investigation into the death of a man who was recently interrogated in relation to a grenade explosion in Jorhat district, as stated by the Director General of Police GP Singh on Tuesday.

On December 14, a blast occurred near an Army camp in Jorhat, but fortunately, no casualties were reported. The United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), an insurgent group, claimed responsibility for the explosion on December 15, according to a report by Deccan Herald.

Rumel Asom, a member of the outfit’s publicity wing, declared that the attack was carried out to protest against the Assam Director General of Police, who repeatedly referred to the ULFA’s “long struggle as a law and order issue.”

Following this incident, Dipankar Gogoi, a 24-year-old man, was apprehended by the police on suspicion of having connections with the banned organization, as reported by Northeast Now.

Later, Gogoi’s lifeless body was discovered in a tea garden behind his residence. His family alleges that he died by suicide due to harassment by the police.

On social media, Singh stated that an inquiry into Gogoi’s death will be conducted by the inspector general of police, eastern range. The investigation will focus on the procedural aspects, including analyzing the CCTV footage from the police station and examining the medical report at the time of Gogoi’s release after questioning.

“Assam Police remains committed to following the procedures outlined by the law when taking action against criminal and terrorist activities,” affirmed Singh.
