Authorities in Carroll County, Virginia, have confirmed that human remains discovered in a wooded area belong to a young boy who went missing in 2003. The remains have been identified as those of Logan Nathaniel Bowman, a 5-year-old child at the time of his disappearance.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office revealed the findings in a recent Facebook post. The remains were discovered last year in the vicinity of Iron Ridge Road in Galax.

To aid in the identification process, the sheriff’s office sought assistance from Othram Inc., a renowned forensic genealogy analysis company that specializes in solving cold cases nationwide.

Using advanced forensic genetic genealogy techniques, Othram Inc. successfully developed a complete DNA profile that facilitated the identification of the remains as Logan Nathaniel Bowman. By conducting two direct DNA comparisons with family members, the company confirmed the match, as stated by the sheriff’s office.

According to information provided by DNASolves.com, a platform associated with Othram, Logan’s remains were discovered inside a trash can at the scene. Additionally, investigators found a white Winnie-the-Pooh blanket adorned with pink flowers, a piece of cloth, and a sleeping bag in close proximity.

The sheriff’s office has determined that the remains had been in the location for an extended period, further complicating the investigation into Logan’s tragic disappearance.

Shortly after Logan’s disappearance in January 2003, his mother, Cynthia Davis, and her then-boyfriend, Dennis Schermerhorn, were arrested and charged. Davis eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of child neglect and one count of homicide related to Logan’s case. She received a 20-year sentence with the child neglect charges suspended, and an additional 30-year sentence with 15 years suspended for the homicide charge, according to DNASolves.com.

Meanwhile, Schermerhorn was convicted of one count of child neglect and received a one-year jail sentence.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that additional charges pertaining to the case are anticipated as the investigation continues.
