St. Joseph County Police Officer Placed on Leave Following Fatal Shooting

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) – The St. Joseph County Police Department has announced that one of its officers is currently on paid administrative leave while the Indiana State Police conduct a thorough investigation into a tragic incident involving the fatal shooting of a suspect. The suspect, identified as 54-year-old Johnny Lee Wood from Elkhart, lost his life during a multi-county pursuit on Christmas Eve.

Chase Begins in Roseland

According to the Indiana State Police (ISP), the incident unfolded when officers received reports of shots fired on Sunday, just before 5:10 a.m. The incident took place in the 200 block of S. Dixie Way in Roseland. Responding swiftly, a St. Joseph County deputy noticed the suspect’s vehicle, a black 2004 Lincoln SUV, and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

Pursuit Escalates

Ignoring the deputy’s signals, the driver of the Lincoln SUV chose to flee, leading law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase. As the pursuit progressed, officers from the Mishawaka Police Department joined forces to assist in apprehending the suspect. The chase continued until it reached Capital Avenue/Elm Road.

Suspect Abandons Vehicle and Flees on Foot

Desperate to evade capture, the driver of the Lincoln SUV eventually steered into a field located approximately half a mile south of the intersection of Elm Road and Tyler Road in Marshall County. Determined to avoid apprehension, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot.

Officers Open Fire

Indiana State Police have reported that both the St. Joseph County deputy and the Mishawaka police officer discharged their firearms at the suspect. It remains unclear at this stage whether the suspect fired back at the officers. Sadly, Johnny Lee Wood was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the encounter.

Investigation Underway

The St. Joseph County Police Department has placed the officer involved in the shooting on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the Indiana State Police investigation. The status of the Mishawaka officer involved in the incident is currently unknown. All relevant findings and evidence will be handed over to the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office for review at the conclusion of the investigation, according to Indiana State Police.
