They immediately informed the victim’s family and the police, who subsequently registered a murder case and initiated an investigation.
Investigation and Arrest
A special police team, led by ACP-Zone-1 Arun Kumar Swain, was formed to solve the case. The team extensively reviewed CCTV footage and compiled a list of known troublemakers, criminals, and drug addicts in the area. Through their investigation, it was revealed that the boy was killed on the rooftop of an abandoned cyclone shelter in the village, and his body was then dumped near Chandan Pokhari.
The team focused on individuals who frequented the cyclone shelter for drug use and identified Babula as a suspect. He was known to sit on the roof of the shelter while indulging in intoxication. The accused had fled the area two days after the incident, but after relentless efforts, he was apprehended on Sunday while hiding in a paddy field near Padmapur.
Babula’s Confession and the Gruesome Act
During the interrogation, Babula admitted to befriending the victim in July and subjecting him to repeated acts of sodomy. He would lure the boy with biscuits and chocolates to the first floor of the abandoned cyclone shelter. On December 16, Babula took the boy to the shelter as usual, but this time the victim resisted, threatening to disclose the abuse to his father.
Enraged by the boy’s resistance, Babula assaulted him with a broken wooden door bottom, causing the victim to fall unconscious. The accused then went to his house, retrieved a sickle, and slit the boy’s throat. He later moved the lifeless body from the cyclone shelter to the road near Chandan Pokhari, where it was abandoned.
