The tragic incident took place at a popular sweetmeat outlet in Durgapur, a city in West Bengal’s Burdwan district, resulting in the death of two individuals while leaving six others in critical condition. The unfortunate event occurred due to a gas leak from a cooking LPG cylinder that was stored in the same storeroom. The bodies of the two deceased victims have been recovered, while the six survivors are currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

The two individuals who lost their lives in the incident have been identified as Bidhan Mondal, aged 21, and Atanu Ruidas, aged 22. It is worth noting that all the deceased and injured individuals hail from Beliatore, a town in the Bankura district of West Bengal.

The mishap is believed to have taken place sometime between late Sunday night and early Monday morning, according to local police sources. One of the employees, before losing consciousness, managed to send an SOS call to the sweetmeat outlet owner. Upon receiving the distress call, the owner rushed to the storeroom and discovered the door locked from the inside. Despite repeated attempts to gain a response by banging on the door, there was no answer.

Concerned for the safety of the individuals inside, the owner sought the assistance of his associates and together they forcibly opened the door. Simultaneously, they alerted the local police station about the situation. The bodies of the two deceased victims were recovered from the storeroom, while the six survivors were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the gas leak occurred in a poorly ventilated storeroom, leading to the tragic incident. Authorities are now working to ascertain the exact cause of the leak and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
