Motorcyclist Arrested After Fleeing Hernando County Deputies

Luis Jose Cabrera

A retention pond failed to provide sufficient cover for a motorcyclist attempting to evade deputies from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

According to Kasey Johnson, the Community Relations Coordinator at HCSO, Sergeant J. Johnson conducted a traffic stop on a motorcycle on the early morning of December 21st at 1:30 a.m. The motorcyclist had disregarded a red traffic light at the intersection of Commercial Way and Trenton Avenue in Spring Hill.

As Sergeant Johnson approached the vehicle, the operator, identified as 29-year-old Luis Jose Cabrera, vehemently claimed innocence before abruptly revving the engine. Cabrera proceeded to perform a daring maneuver, executing a full circle in the middle of the roadway, and ultimately fleeing the scene.

Once the motorcyclist was out of sight, Sergeant Johnson promptly radioed a description of the motorcycle to other patrolling deputies, enlisting their assistance in the pursuit.

Shortly thereafter, a vigilant deputy spotted a motorcycle matching the provided description near a restaurant located at the intersection of Commercial Way and Wendy Court.

The deputies swiftly entered the restaurant premises and approached Cabrera, who promptly attempted to evade arrest by bolting out of the building and fleeing on foot upon sighting law enforcement.

In a desperate bid to elude the deputies, Cabrera resorted to jumping over a fence and plunging into a nearby retention pond.

However, his efforts were in vain as the deputies engaged in a brief conversation with Cabrera, eventually convincing him to surrender. Subsequent investigations revealed that Cabrera had been operating an unregistered motorcycle and did not possess a valid motorcycle license.

To compound his legal troubles, a search of Cabrera’s possession led to the discovery of 3.1 grams of cocaine.

Consequently, Cabrera was promptly arrested and subsequently booked into the Hernando County Detention Center. He now faces multiple charges, including fleeing to elude law enforcement, resisting arrest without violence, failure to register a motor vehicle, failure to possess the required endorsement on a driver’s license, and possession of cocaine.

Cabrera’s case is currently pending, and he has been released on bond while awaiting further legal proceedings.
