MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (KFVS) – Multiple individuals suffered injuries following an alarming incident that took place in the early hours of Monday morning in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Officer Witnesses Shooting Incident

According to the Mount Vernon Police Department, an officer was on patrol in the 300 block of S. 9th Street at approximately 12:53 a.m. on Christmas morning. The officer witnessed a distressing sight as 20-year-old Maliq I. Petties discharged a firearm, injuring another individual.

Police Chase Ensues

Reacting promptly, the officer approached Petties and issued commands, but the suspect failed to comply and fled the scene in a vehicle. A pursuit was initiated, and law enforcement officers chased Petties through Mount Vernon and towards the western side of the town.

The pursuit intensified as Petties reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour on Broadway St. The suspect then proceeded to travel northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 57, originating from Illinois 15.

Collision with Squad Car

During the chase, Petties lost control of his vehicle just south of the north split. Consequently, he collided with a squad car, resulting in moderate damage to both vehicles.

Foot Chase and Officer’s Action

Following the collision, Petties abandoned his vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. It was during this foot chase that Petties reached into his waistband, causing a pursuing officer to discharge a single shot in response.

Fortunately, the shot did not hit anyone, ensuring the safety of those involved.

Capture and Weapons Recovery

Despite Petties’ efforts, law enforcement officers managed to apprehend him. However, he resisted arrest before ultimately being taken into custody.

Authorities discovered a firearm at the scene, likely the same weapon used in the initial shooting incident.

Injuries and Medical Attention

As a result of the incident, two officers sustained injuries and were promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment. Fortunately, both officers were later released after receiving medical care.

The victim who was shot also received medical attention at a local hospital. Though the injuries were deemed non-life threatening, the victim was subsequently transported to a hospital in the St. Louis area for further treatment.

Investigation and Charges

Given the discharge of the officer’s firearm and the ensuing traffic accident, the Illinois State Police have been called upon to conduct a thorough investigation.

Maliq I. Petties, the suspect responsible for the incident, has been lodged at the Jefferson County Justice Center. He faces numerous charges, including aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated fleeing/attempting to elude, armed violence, resisting arrest, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and a Franklin County warrant with no bond.
