Tragic Accident Claims Life of Northwestern Minnesota Man as ATV Plunges Through Ice on Big Toad Lake

A devastating incident unfolded on Big Toad Lake in northwestern Minnesota, as Jerry Keith Buhr, a 67-year-old resident of Osage, Minn., tragically lost his life when the ATV he was driving plunged through the icy surface. This unfortunate incident was reported by the Becker County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday.

The incident came to the attention of authorities around 2:05 a.m. when Buhr’s concerned wife contacted the sheriff’s office. She revealed that her husband had gone fishing near their residence on Big Toad Lake and had not returned home. Worried by his absence and unsuccessful attempts to reach him, she sought the assistance of Buhr’s brother in locating him.

Upon investigation, Buhr’s brother discovered a crack in the ice with open water, prompting his wife to immediately contact the sheriff’s office for urgent help. In response, deputies and emergency personnel from the Wolf Lake and Detroit Lakes fire departments promptly arrived at the scene, accompanied by the sheriff’s office airboat.

After a thorough search, personnel on the airboat made a heartbreaking discovery at approximately 3:22 a.m. They found Buhr’s lifeless body along with the overturned ATV submerged in 4 to 5 feet of water. Swiftly, he was taken to an ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Becker County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into this tragic incident, seeking to understand the circumstances that led to the ATV plunging through the ice on Big Toad Lake. As the investigation unfolds, authorities will meticulously examine all aspects surrounding the accident.
