An Instagram model, Theresa “Tita” Cachuela, tragically lost her life when her husband allegedly shot her in the parking lot of a Hawaii mall, in front of one of their young children.

The incident occurred at the Pearlridge Center mall in Honolulu. Honolulu police Lt. Deena Thoemmes informed reporters that a call regarding a “suspicious circumstance” was received around 10:15 a.m. on December 22, 2023. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the lifeless body of Theresa Cachuela, 33, with gunshot wounds. Jason Cachuela, her 44-year-old husband, was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound behind a home, approximately five miles away, according to Thoemmes.

The shooting took place during a busy time in the parking lot, as Christmas shoppers were beginning to arrive. Witness Danny Earles recounted the terrifying moment, saying, “I jumped behind a cement column. And then… he must have put another clip in. I hear pop, pop, pop, pop, and I shut down. That’s like 12 bullets, and then I crouched down and ran out of the parking lot.”

Court records reveal that Theresa Cachuela had obtained a temporary restraining order against her husband just two days prior to the incident. In the restraining order, Theresa stated that her husband had subjected her to continuous harassment, made threats of suicide in front of her and their three children, and even held a knife up to his own neck. She also recounted an incident where she discovered him hiding under her car in the garage. Theresa filed for the restraining order on December 8, stating in the filing, “I am doing this to protect myself, my children and to hopefully get him the help he needs.”

The court granted a one-year restraining order, specifying that the Cachuelas could only have contact during child exchanges for visitation. Additionally, Jason Cachuela was ordered to surrender any firearms he possessed.

According to Theresa Cachuela’s mother, Lucita Ani-Nihoa, the couple had been experiencing marital problems, with Jason being abusive towards her daughter. Theresa had recently filed for divorce after nearly 11 years of marriage. Ani-Nihoa expressed her grief and frustration with the justice system, stating, “She wanted to leave him but he wasn’t accepting it. He tried to control her with everything… where she would go, what she would do.”

Now, the family finds themselves mourning the loss of Theresa during what should be a joyous holiday season. Roy Nihoa, Ani-Nihoa’s husband, shared, “Lives have changed forever.”

In an emotional GoFundMe post, Ani-Nihoa wrote about her daughter and grandchildren’s plans to meet for breakfast on Christmas day to exchange gifts. She expressed the devastation felt by the family, saying, “My daughter did not deserve this. She was trying so hard to get help, but the justice system failed her. We are so devastated with the loss of our beloved Tita.”

Known on Instagram as Bunny Bontiti, Theresa Cachuela had a following of approximately 20,000. She worked as a model and sold eyelashes online.

Terrell Scott, Theresa’s cousin, emphasized her dedication as a mother and business owner. Speaking to local ABC affiliate KITV, he said, “She was very supportive of her kids and she did everything she could to protect them. She’s super loving and an amazing woman. I love her, and I’m sorry her kids are going through this.”
