Five individuals who were arrested in northern France last week as part of an investigation into a criminal terrorist conspiracy have been released without charge, according to a judicial source on Monday.
The four individuals who were students, aged between 20 and 23 years old, were released on Saturday. Additionally, a fifth man, born in 2002 and identified as radicalized by the authorities, was released on Sunday.
The initial arrests were made due to concerns that a potential attack was being planned. However, as of Monday, a source close to the case stated that there is currently no new evidence to support this theory, even though the investigation is still ongoing.
The arrests took place on Friday in Nancy and two other towns within the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in northern France. The suspects were apprehended by the intelligence services and are believed to be associated with an Islamist movement, according to another source.
Last Friday, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin urged local authorities to maintain “extreme vigilance” during the Christmas and Epiphany festivities due to the “very high level of terrorist threat that continues to exist.”
In October, France raised its emergency alert level to the highest following the murder of Dominique Bernard, a French teacher who was fatally stabbed by a radicalized former pupil in northern France.
The activation of the emergency level is also in response to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has an international impact.
