In a horrifying incident that has shocked the nation, a 28-year-old woman in Assam’s Sonitpur district was brutally attacked with sharp weapons and burned alive by a group of six individuals. The motive behind this heinous act was believed to be the woman’s alleged practice of witchcraft, according to the police.

The police have managed to apprehend four individuals in connection with the case, while two others remain at large.

Madhurima Das, the Additional Superintendent of Police for Sonitpur district, stated that three arrests were made on the night of December 24, with another arrest occurring on Monday. A case has been registered at Tezpur police station. Das further revealed that a total of six individuals were involved in this gruesome crime.

According to reports, the victim, identified as Sangita Kapi, was a mother of three children. She was mercilessly beaten by the group of six and ultimately set ablaze near her residence. The assailants branded her as a ‘witch’ due to her alleged involvement in witchcraft.

The husband of the victim recounted the horrific incident, stating that the attackers accused his wife of practicing witchcraft before subjecting her to a brutal assault and setting her on fire. The village headman promptly informed the police after witnessing the gruesome act.

The victim’s body was later transported to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital for further investigation through a post-mortem examination.

It is worth noting that in 2018, the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention, and Protection) Act was implemented to combat the rise of such heinous acts and provide comprehensive measures to prohibit witch hunting while ensuring the safety and protection of individuals vulnerable to such allegations.

As this shocking incident gains national attention, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of eradicating superstitions and promoting tolerance and acceptance in society.
